Day of the Seafarer - 2023

Seafarers, MARPOL and the marine environment

As we celebrate Day of the Seafarer, I extend appreciation and admiration for the brave men and women who navigate the vast seas/oceans, connecting continents and driving global
trade whilst upholding the principles of MARPOL. This year’s theme: “MARPOL at 50 – Our Commitment goes on”, with the focus on Seafarers, MARPOL, and the marine environment, is timely as Jamaica strives for an improved maritime space.

The dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment of our seafarers and the maritime industry are truly commendable. Today, we specially highlight your vital role as custodians         of MARPOL and stewards of the marine environment. Your invaluable contributions to maritime sustainability and the global economy are truly commendable. Seafarers, your                   commitment to its implementation ensures that our oceans remain pristine and teeming with life, for now and the future. The regulations set out by MARPOL are not merely a set of           guidelines; they embody Jamaica’s maritime collective responsibility to protect our marine ecosystems.

The marine environment faces numerous challenges, including pollution and climate change, among other practices. Every organism plays an important role in maintaining the overall
health of an ecosystem. The earth’s surface is made up of 70% water, and the marine environment is home to some of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. The sea is not only a blue highway useful for shipping activities; it plays an important role in balancing the planet and the oceans are teeming with life. The seafarer therefore works in tandem with the marine environment and impacts its viability.

The work of Seafarers and their tireless efforts in adhering to these standards are testament to their professionalism and sense of duty. The numerous challenges faced in preserving our
marine environment. Your commitment to international conventions, such as MARPOL, and the marine environment embodies stewardship.

Seafarers, you are unsung heroes who face challenges of isolation, separation from loved ones, and unpredictable conditions daily. Your sacrifice and dedication deserve the utmost respect and support. The Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport supports our Seafarers in advocating and ensuring that their rights, well-being, fair treatment
are heard at the national and international levels.

Today, as we celebrate the Day of the Seafarer, we collectively express gratitude for your invaluable contributions and role play as custodians of our marine environment. Together, let us continue to protect our oceans #OceansWorthProtecting #DotS2023. Your efforts are the driving force behind a prosperous and sustainable maritime industry.

Happy Day of the Seafarer!
Our Commitment goes on.
