For centuries, mariners relied on equipment aboard the ship for safe navigation. Modern navigational equipment includes a gyro compass, radar, autopilot, global positioning system (GPS), and echo sounder. The faithful equipment forms the base for passage across oceans to deliver cargo or passengers in a safe and timely manner. Over time, the reliable equipment earned the trust of the navigator. “WITHOUT OUR oceans there would be no maritime industry, so it is fitting on World Maritime Day 2023 that Jamaica joins the international shipping industry to celebrate all that we have done, and continue to
do, to protect our vital marine environments.

Today’s theme across the globe is ‘MARPOL at 50 – our commitment goes on’. MARPOL is the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, and 50 years ago it was introduced by the International Maritime Organization, which governs global shipping.
