High Demand for CMU Graduates

Graduates of the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) are highly sought after by international shipping interests to man their vessels. In an interview with JIS News, Director General of the

Maritime Authority of Jamaica, Rear Admiral Peter Brady, said that approximately 95 per cent of the crews that are provided in Jamaica for international shipping lines are CMU graduates.

Jamaica At No 1 For Cargo Movements, But Dom Rep Closing In

Cargo ports in Kingston ranked first in the Caribbean and eighth in Latin America for cargo movements in 2017 despite flat performance, according to data released by a United Nations regional body.

The port in Caucedo, Dominican Republic, ranked second in the Caribbean, having grown its cargo movement by one-third last year to shorten the gap between itself and Jamaica.

Jamaica Elected to IMO Council

Jamaica has re-established its position at the heart of international maritime rule-making following its election to the International Maritime Organization's Council on Friday December 1, 2017 during the IMO 30th General Assembly meeting.

Jamaica is a Category C Council member and will serve for the 2018-2019 biennium.

Port Authority signs agreement to improve towage services in Port of Kingston

KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — The Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ) and Canada-based maritime company, Ocean, have signed a 10-year concession agreement, which will result in an improvement in towage services in the Port of Kingston.

Towage is the pulling of ships and other vessels along the water, usually by means of a small steamer called a tug.
