International Fisherman’s Day

The Maritime Authority of Jamaica will be represented at the International Fisherman’s Day Thanksgiving Mass on Sunday June 24, 2018 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Harbour View, St. Andrew. The service begins at 8:00 am.

 

International Fisherman’s Day (IFD) is celebrated annually on June 29 in different countries around the world where the celebrations may last from one to several days. Historically June 29 is celebrated as the feast day of St. Peter, patron saint of fisherfolk, denoting the religious significance that accompanies this day which is also often associated with much festivities and celebrations. This year’s activities also include IFD conference on June 29, 2018 and Safety at Sea Training sessions islandwide with the Jamaica Defense Force Coast Guard.

 

The planning and coordination of IFD activities are spearheaded by a committee comprised of representatives from Caribbean Coastal Area Management Foundation, Jamaica Fisherman’s Cooperative Union, Fisheries Division, Ministry of Industry Commerce Agriculture and Fisheries and Food for the Poor Jamaica.
