Under the Shipping Act of 1998 Section 55, all small vessels less than 24 metres in length operating in or from Jamaican waters, are required to be licenced. For the vessel to be licensed it must be registered with the MAJ, a Safety Inspection is conducted and both a Certificate of Registration and a Safety Certificate will be issued for each vessel subsequent to all requirements are met.
Vessels operating as a commercial vessel e.g. Commercial fishing, Watersports, Entertainment, conveying of passengers, etc. are required to have safety inspections conducted annually. Privately owned vessels e.g. Private yachts, Sports Fishermen, etc. are required to have safety inspections conducted every two years.
